Stephen Turer, Raymond Severt heads into court for opening statements on Monday, Aug. The orthopedic surgeon, who has surrendered his medical license, is accused of trying to meet a girl for sex in Novato after a series of sexually explicit texts.

She also noted that Severt had been warned by police for similar conduct in an AOL chat room some 16 years ago, an incident that was not presented to the jury during the trial.

Defense attorney Stephen Turer said Severt is an otherwise respected community member motivated to help people through his medical practice.
